Prismatic Films

Optically clear polymer sheet with prismatic surface relief structures are used in Display, Projection and Lighting applications to perform a number of functions.

  • As brightness enhancing devices to increase the brightness of backlights
  • As light directing films for producing defined angles of viewing.
  • To enhance screen brightness
  • As anti-reflective devices to reduce reflection glare

Prism Structures

A wide variety of potential prism structures can be created which act to redirect light. Non-linear structures operate to locally focus or defocus light in addition to redirecting it.

For specific displays applications, Microsharp will design the optimal prismatic structure and then develop a coating drum from which the prismatic sheet is manufactured. Microsharp's experience in coating lacquer development has also enabled it to produce in-house lacquers with a wide range of refractive indices.

Redirection of Surface Glare

Prismatic film reflects glare away from principle viewing angle by shifting the specular reflection spot significantly away from the viewing direction.

Backlight Light Redirection

Prismatic materials play an important role in many backlight designs, serving to correct the direction of light from a side light through a display. By using both vertical and horizontal prismatic films, light from the backlight can be collimated into a narrow range of directions, thereby significantly enhancing display brightness. Appropriately selected diffuser films then restore the correct viewing angle.

Light redirection in projection displays

In order to progressively reduce the depth of back projection displays it is necessary to create increasingly folded light paths for the projected image. However the light still needs to come through the display normal to it. Therefore many ultraslim RPTV designs can use prismatic film to act as a fresnel light redirection optical surface within the appropriately designed projection system optics.
