Microsharp International Patent Application for Novel Brightness Enhancement Film

A Microsharp international patent application for a novel brightness enhancement film has been published as WO2006/064259 with the title "Structured Optical Film". Microsharp has also made the same patent application in Taiwan, where international patent applications are not recognized. The film may be applied in backlights for LCD displays.

The film structure consists of peaks and valleys with the same dihedral angle, but the spacings between the peaks and valleys are not regular: this has the advantage of reducing their potential for moire interference problems. In a preferred embodiment, the peaks are disposed in a substantially coplanar fashion, which may enhance the light recycling function of the film when used as a brightness enhancement film. Although a peak and valley angle of 90 degrees is preferred for the application as a brightness enhancement film, other peak and valley angles may be used for other applications, such as in light redirecting films.

This patent application supports Microsharp's expansion into the business of the manufacture of microprismatic polymer films, and is complemented by Microsharp's existing international patent application for a high refractive index polymer material which has been published as WO04/074884.
